Most PGT door installations in Houston run between $350 and $1,100 per door when you’re replacing hardware, weatherstripping, or a full slab, depending on whether we’re salvaging the existing frame or starting fresh. We stock PGT-compatible rollers, hinges, handlesets, sweeps, thresholds, and astragals, and we can typically have a technician at your door within two to three business days. The call usually starts the same way: a door that scrapes the threshold, a handle that spins without catching, or a lock that no longer lines up with the strike plate after years of Houston humidity pulling the slab out of true.
If that sounds like your door right now, here’s what you need to know before you spend a dollar on parts or labor.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT has built several door lines over the years, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The most common units we see in Houston homes are the PGT WinGuard sliding glass doors, the PGT 5500 and 7700 series hinged doors, and the PGT Signature line. Each uses different roller diameters, latch geometries, and weatherstripping profiles, so matching the part to the exact model is the first step and the one that trips up most DIY attempts.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing: PGT changed its roller hardware design twice in the last decade, and a door stamped 2015 may take a completely different roller than one stamped 2018, even if both are WinGuard models. The only reliable way to identify the part is to read the glass etch or the label on the door edge, not the frame. If the label is gone, we use the glass thickness and the roller axle width to pin it down. For aftermarket equivalents, we’re comfortable using them on non-impact doors where tolerances allow, but on any PGT impact-rated unit, we recommend OEM parts only. Aftermarket rollers on a WinGuard door tend to fail the way generic brake pads do: they fit, but not for long.

Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door scrapes or drags along the track. Houston’s clay soil shifts with every wet-dry cycle, and slabs in older neighborhoods like the Heights and Meyerland settle unevenly. A door that scrapes usually means the rollers have worn flat or the frame has shifted out of square. Fixing the roller is a quick job; ignoring it until the track itself is gouged is a much more expensive one.
- The handle spins without engaging the latch. PGT handlesets use an internal gear mechanism in multipoint lock models. When that gear strips, you lose the lock entirely. On single-point latches, the problem is more often the latch body rusting from inside, a direct result of years of Gulf Coast humidity working through the original factory grease.
- You can feel a draft or see daylight under the door. The interlocking threshold and door sweep on a PGT unit are designed to seal as a matched pair. When one wears, the other follows quickly, and what starts as a small draft in January becomes a water intrusion point by hurricane season. In Houston, this is not a cosmetic problem.
- The door sticks mid-swing or won’t close flush. Hinges on PGT hinged doors carry a lot of weight, especially on 7700 series units with laminated glass. Once a hinge pin begins to oval out the hinge leaf, the door will never seat properly again until that hinge is replaced.
- Locking the door requires lifting, pulling, or forcing the handle. This almost always means the slab has sagged relative to the frame, and the lock is now fighting the weight of the door instead of just sliding home. It’s the most common reason a homeowner calls us after a break-in attempt, because a door that doesn’t lock is a door that doesn’t protect anything.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical PGT door installation in Houston, here’s what we quote:
- Roller replacement (sliding door): $180 to $340 per door, including new rollers, track cleaning, and frame adjustment.
- Handleset or latch replacement: $220 to $450, depending on whether it’s a single-point or multipoint lock.
- Weatherstripping, sweep, and threshold: $150 to $350, including removal of the old adhesive and a fit test with a feeler gauge.
- Hinge replacement and door rehang: $280 to $520, including shimming the frame back to square.
- Full slab replacement (frame kept): $700 to $1,100, depending on glass type and panel size.
Every quote includes parts, labor, disposal, and the written line-item price before any work starts. That’s a standing rule at Lightwell, not a courtesy. Our workmanship warranty runs a full 365 days under the Done Right Promise, and if something we touched fails in that window, we return and make it right without a debate about who caused what. Keith Yamada has been the one signing those promises since he learned to seat a frame square, and he does not sign what he cannot stand behind.

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for a visible gap under the door when closed, try the lock with the door both open and shut, and listen for grinding in the rollers. Those observations help us diagnose faster, and we welcome a homeowner who has done their homework. What we would not recommend is disassembling a PGT multipoint lock or trying to extract a roller without the right track jack. Those mechanisms are under tension, and the clips that hold PGT rollers in place are easy to snap if you don’t know which direction they release. A snapped clip turns a $200 repair into a door that won’t stay on its track.
If you’re not sure which side of the line your repair falls on, call us at (254) 401-4583 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth a service call or something you can handle in ten minutes. That kind of call costs you nothing, and it saves us both from a bigger problem later.
FAQs
Rollers on a PGT sliding door in Houston typically last 7 to 10 years before the bearings flatten, though homes closer to the coast or with salt exposure can see failures in 5 to 6 years. Handlesets and hinges usually outlast the rollers by several years, unless the door has settled out of square and every cycle is grinding the hardware down faster. The humidity is not the main killer of hardware; it’s the constant expansion and contraction of the frame against the slab.
Sometimes, but not usually in a way that lasts. A roller can be cleaned and lubed to buy a few more months, but once the bearing inside is flat, no lubricant fixes it. A multipoint lock gear that has stripped one tooth will continue to strip until it fails completely. We’ll tell you if a repair is viable, but our honest experience is that most PGT hardware failures are wear failures, not contamination failures. Call (254) 401-4583 if you want a straight answer about your specific door.
Most roller, handle, and weatherstripping replacements on a PGT door take between one and two hours from the time we arrive to the time we walk you through the finished work. A full slab replacement typically runs three to four hours. We clean up before we leave, and we’ll send you a photo of the work area so you can see it even if you’re not home.
We keep the most common PGT rollers, latches, and sweeps on our trucks because those are the parts that fail most often in Houston’s climate. Less common items, like multipoint lock gearboxes for older 7700 units, we source directly from our supplier network, which usually adds two to three days. If we can’t get a part, we’ll tell you before you spend anything, and we’ll help you figure out the next step.
